“I’ve known about and loved the Lolita style for many years now but have been unable to buy any of the clothing due to price. I’m close to being able to purchase the Lolita clothing I’ve been dreaming of but now I’m nervous to. I don’t care about what strangers think of me but I’m afraid the Lolita-community will call me an Ita simply because I have yet to start a collection. Why do some Lolitas look down on others? We all had to start out somewhere, so why is it bad to be a beginner?”
I know I JUST said that I was swearing off this confession Tumblr, but someone just said they couldn’t find it so I had to see if I was calling it something weird on accident and saw this XD To answer your questions shortly, which coincides with my earlier rant: They typically don’t, and it’s not.
Every single Lolita has been a beginner at one point. Unless one of them won the lottery to get started, nearly every Lolita has started their collection with just one piece and nearly every Lolita is perfectly aware of this and will most likely not look down on you for starting a collection, one piece at a time. Most of them will not look down on you if you decide to stop your collection at even just one piece. If there are Lolitas out there who are jerks to other Lolitas, they are generally isolated incidents and they’re going to be jerks whether or not they are wearing Lolita. Life sometimes has jerks in it and it’s silly to a) assume everyone out there is one of them, and b) decide not to do something you want to do out of fear that one of them will pop up to tell you you’re wrong.
P.S. “Ita” means someone who is wearing a very badly put together outfit, not a beginner. So unless your first piece is literally made out of an old pillowcase with lace hot glued to it, you probably won’t be called an Ita. If you are super worried, and willing to modify your plans, just ask another Lolita for help, there are tons of them out there who are very, very willing to help a noobie out if they’re asking for advice on what to get first!
This is me doing me “UGH I’M GOING TO JUST REPLY TO EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM” thing XD
^^EXACTLY.
I have NEVER met a Lolita who looked down on beginners. This stereotype is a LIE. I heard this everywhere when I first started and it terrified me, now I know it couldn’t be farther from the truth.
